Storage VPS A KVM server whose disk grows when you need it

A storage VPS is a virtual server you size by its disk rather than its CPU. Here you start with any KVM plan, from €4.99 a month in Amsterdam, and add disk in 15 GB blocks at €1.00 per block and month from the panel, while the server keeps running. The storage is replicated enterprise flash, so it suits backups, file sync and build caches that also need to be quick; for several terabytes on one machine, compare a dedicated server as well.

01How it works

How do I add storage to my VPS?

From the panel, on a running server, with no ticket and no reinstall. Four steps, and only the last one happens inside your operating system.

  1. 01

    Order any KVM plan

Extra storage is an add-on for any active KVM VPS: Standard, Hi-CPU, DMCA Ignored or Pentesting KVM. Choose the plan for its vCores and RAM; the disk can follow later.

  2. 02

    Choose the blocks

Open your server in the panel and click Add storage, or Upgrade service → More storage. Pick up to 40 blocks of 15 GB per order; the dialog shows the disk size now and afterwards, and what is due until the next renewal.

  3. 03

    Pay, and the disk grows

The first invoice covers only the days until the server renews; after that, the blocks are part of its monthly price. Once paid, the virtual disk is enlarged straight away while the server keeps running.

  4. 04

    Extend the partition

Your operating system still sees the old partition size. Growing it takes a few commands on Linux or one wizard on Windows, as section 03 shows, and support helps if your layout is unusual.

Extra storage renews together with the server and cannot be removed later. Add it in steps as your data grows rather than all at once.

02Disk per euro

Which plan gives the most disk for the money?

Every size of Standard KVM and Hi-CPU KVM with its disk and Amsterdam price, and what one storage block adds on top.

Storage block+15 GB€1.00/mo15.0

At €1.00 per 15 GB, a storage block adds more disk per euro than moving up any step of the plan ladder.

Same disk, same price

Standard KVM and Hi-CPU KVM put the same disk behind the same nine prices and differ in vCores and RAM. DMCA Ignored KVM and Pentesting KVM carry the same disks at their own, higher prices.

Blocks or a bigger plan?

A plan upgrade raises vCores, RAM and disk together, which is the right step when the server is short of all three. When only the disk is full, blocks add exactly that, 15 GB at a time.

One price per block

Plan prices differ by line and location. A storage block costs €1.00 a month whichever plan it is added to.

Pay for the server by card, PayPal or crypto (Bitcoin, Ethereum, USDT, Litecoin, Monero and more), with no ID check at sign-up: how paying in crypto works.

03Which to buy

Storage add-on, a bigger plan, or object storage?

Three ways to get more room on a VPS, and when each one is the right buy.

A storage add-on

Expandable storage VPS

Need a VPS with extra storage? Blocks of 15 GB go onto your VPS from the panel, up to 40 per order (600 GB), while the server keeps running. The way to add disk to a VPS when the plan's CPU and RAM are already right and only the disk is short. Same root server, same IP, one partition to grow.

Pick this when: only the disk is full.

A bigger plan

More of everything

Moving up a step of the ladder raises vCores, RAM and disk together. The right step when the server is short of more than disk — a database that also wants memory, a game server that also wants cores. Upgrade from the panel; the server keeps its data and IP.

Pick this when: the whole plan is tight, not just the disk.

Object storage

A different tool

S3-style object storage holds huge or very numerous files behind an HTTP API, not a filesystem you mount. We do not sell it; it is listed here so the choice is clear. For many terabytes, or for serving files straight to the public at scale, a dedicated object-storage service fits better than growing a VPS disk.

Pick this when: you need many terabytes or an HTTP file API — from another service.

A storage add-on is €1.00 per 15 GB block and month on every KVM plan; object storage is priced by whoever you buy it from.

04Filesystem

How do I use the new space?

The panel enlarges the virtual disk; the partition and the filesystem inside it are yours. Take a backup from the panel before you change partitions.

Linux

  1. 01Run lsblk to see which disk and partition hold your data. The disk already shows its new size, the partition still the old one; device names differ between servers, so use the ones lsblk prints.
  2. 02If that partition is the last one on the disk, grow it with growpart (package cloud-guest-utils on Debian and Ubuntu), then grow the filesystem: resize2fs for ext4, xfs_growfs with the mount point for XFS. Both work while it is mounted.
  3. 03On an LVM layout, grow the partition the same way, then run pvresize on it and lvextend -r on the logical volume.
  4. 04If another partition sits behind it, or you would rather leave the system partition alone, create a new partition in the free space, format it and mount it, for example at /data. Not sure which applies? Support helps.
Linux · with your own device names
# Use the disk, partition and mount names lsblk prints.
lsblk # new disk size, old partition size
sudo apt update && sudo apt install cloud-guest-utils
sudo growpart /dev/sdX N # grow partition N of disk sdX
sudo resize2fs /dev/sdXN # ext4, while mounted
sudo xfs_growfs /mountpoint # XFS: the mount point
df -h # check
# LVM: sudo pvresize /dev/sdXN, then
# sudo lvextend -r -l +100%FREE /dev/<vg>/<lv>

growpart only grows a partition into free space directly behind it, and changes nothing if there is none. Unsure what your layout is? Ask support before you change partitions.

Windows Server

  1. 01Open Disk Management (diskmgmt.msc) as Administrator. The new space appears as Unallocated at the end of the disk.
  2. 02Right-click C:, choose Extend Volume, keep the maximum available space and finish the wizard. Windows does not need a restart for this.
  3. 03Prefer PowerShell? The two lines below do the same; run them as Administrator.
  4. 04Extend Volume greyed out? Then another partition, often a recovery partition, sits between C: and the free space, and Windows only extends a volume into space directly behind it. Do not delete it blindly: create a new volume in the free space instead, or ask support.
PowerShell, as Administrator
# Grow C: into the free space directly behind it
$size = Get-PartitionSupportedSize -DriveLetter C
Resize-Partition -DriveLetter C -Size $size.SizeMax

The space does not show as Unallocated? Choose Action → Rescan Disks in Disk Management, or restart once.

Disk already full and you are not sure why? No space left on device shows how to find what is using it.

05Use cases

What is a storage VPS good for?

Workloads that need room more than raw CPU, on a full server with root access, so the software is your choice.

Off-site backup target

Point restic, Borg or rsync over SSH at the VPS and keep a copy of your data away from the machine it protects; if your servers are with us too, put it in the other city. Encrypt on the client and use the VPS for backups only.

Your own file sync

Nextcloud on Ubuntu or Debian keeps files, calendars and contacts on a server you control. Put its data directory on the grown disk, and point a domain at the VPS with HTTPS before you invite anyone.

A media library

Jellyfin streams your own films and music to your devices. Playing files as they are costs little CPU, while transcoding is heavy, so give it Standard KVM's extra vCores. Everything you store has to be legal under our Acceptable Use Policy.

Build caches and artifacts

CI caches, container image layers, package mirrors and release artifacts: data that is cheap to lose but slow to rebuild. A cache next to your runners saves the download on every job.

When is a storage VPS the wrong buy?

Several terabytes on one machine

Blocks are ordered up to 40 at a time, on top of the plan's own disk. If you need several terabytes in one place, also look at a dedicated server in Amsterdam: local disks with a whole machine around them, priced per build.

Your only copy

The cluster keeps copies on other nodes, which covers a failed drive, not a deleted folder or a bad script. Our terms leave backups to you, so keep a second copy somewhere else.

Public downloads around the clock

Traffic is fair use and not metered per GB. Saturating the shared uplink day and night is the exception: the Acceptable Use Policy counts it as misuse of resources.

06FAQ

Storage VPS: questions

Everything you need to know before deploying — and a human if you need more.

A virtual private server chosen mainly for its disk space: a full KVM machine with root access that you use as a backup target, file server or cache. At VMHeaven it is any KVM plan plus 15 GB storage blocks, up to 40 per order, added from the panel at €1.00 per block and month.

€1.00 per 15 GB block and month, the same on every plan of all four KVM lines. One order takes up to 40 blocks (600 GB). The first invoice is pro rata until the server's next renewal; after that the blocks are part of the monthly price. Amounts under €2.00 are paid from your account balance.

No reinstall. The virtual disk is enlarged right after payment while the server keeps running, and your data on it stays as it is. To use the space, grow the partition and the filesystem as well: usually growpart with resize2fs or xfs_growfs on Linux, or Extend Volume in Disk Management on Windows, without a restart. If your layout is different, support helps.

No. Extra storage renews together with the server and cannot be taken off again, so add blocks in steps as you need them. They end when the server ends.

Flash. Every plan's disk sits on enterprise flash in a replicated Ceph cluster that keeps copies of your data on other nodes, and storage blocks extend that same disk. Replication protects against failed hardware, not against deletion, so keep your own backup elsewhere.

No. Storage blocks are for KVM VPS only. A dedicated server comes with its own disks, listed for every build on its product page, and each web hosting plan has a fixed amount of storage.
